A cohesive society is the bedrock for economic development

"Singapore was able to respond and recover swiftly from the economic downturn last year because we stood united as a cohesive society in the face of adversity. By standing united towards a single-minded goal, we were able to implement bold measures to achieve results that we would not have been able to do as individuals." I said this when I addressed parents and students at the Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC Citizens' Consultative Committee (CCC) Bursaries this morning. I also highlighted three key areas where we were able to make a difference by staying united and cohesive.

Firstly, we galvanised community resources and support to help fellow residents. The job fairs and CCC bursaries were examples where we were there for one another in a time of need.

Secondly, we took charge of the common problems we face and solved them. For example, to combat the scourge of loanshark harassment, grassroots leaders and volunteers worked with the Police and Town Council implemented measures to safeguard the well-being and interest of our community.

Thirdly, the social cohesion and stability laid the foundation that is crucial for our economic recovery and continued growth. This cohesion and harmony form the bedrock of Singapore’s peace and stability upon which our economic success is built.

Singapore is peaceful today, but do not be lulled into complacency, believing that racial and religious conflicts can never happen in Singapore. We just have to look at the recent examples in Europe, Australia and Malaysia where there were tensions and conflicts.

Addressing the students, I asked them to remember the Chinese saying “取之社会,用之社会” and urged them to work hard in their studies and remember to contribute back to society one day.

A total of $127,000 was given out to 619 students from primary to tertiary levels. It was the second year that all five Divisions in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC came together to hold a combined CCC Bursary Presentation Ceremony.
